As an Irrigation Central Control (ICC) Technician, you will be responsible for the operation, stability, and performance of The City of Calgary’s centralized irrigation control systems. These systems support a large, distributed network of park and landscape assets and play a critical role in water stewardship, asset protection, regulatory compliance, and public service delivery.
This position goes beyond routine monitoring or field maintenance. The ICC Technician will apply independent technical judgment, a deep understanding of industrial control systems, and strong diagnostic skills to resolve complex issues that span software, communications networks, electrical components, and field infrastructure. Primary duties include:
- Operate, monitor, and manage centralized irrigation control systems to ensure reliable, efficient, and compliant water delivery across parks and landscaped assets.
- Diagnose and resolve complex system, communication, and control issues, including alarms, abnormal flow conditions, controller or Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) failures, and pump or booster station integration problems.
- Assess system data independently, prioritize issues based on operational risk, and implement corrective actions within established policies and water management objectives.
- Configure, commission, and integrate new or accepted irrigation sites and pump systems into centralized control, verifying communications, validating control logic, testing functionality, and documenting system configuration.
- Maintain accurate technical records, system documentation, inventories, and reports that support operations, performance monitoring, and regulatory or internal reporting.
- Exercise a high level of professional autonomy by making real time technical decisions that have immediate and visible operational impact.
- Perform work that blends industrial control systems, wireless and multiprotocol communications, electrical and electronic troubleshooting, and data driven analysis.
- Adapt to seasonal variety, performing hands-on field work during the irrigation season and analytical, planning, and system optimization work during winter months.
Qualifications
- A completed 2 year diploma or technical certificate in Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation & Control Technology, Automation Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of progressive, hands-on experience working with industrial automated control systems.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Demonstrated experience configuring, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting controllers, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), communication equipment, and associated control infrastructure.
- A high attention to detail, along with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
